The Magic Flute, or "Die Zauberflöte" in German, is still one of the most performed operas today. Around the same period, Richard Wagner (1813 – 1883) went probably further in reinventing the genre conventions: he built up his own settings to comply with his desires and ambitions for his pieces. By contrast, most of Wagner’s critics contend that no such separation between the man and the art is possible.

In 1877, Wagner began work on Parsifal, his final opera. Well known philosophers and intellectuals have written about his work, including Susan Sontag, Gilles Deleuze and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. Unlike other opera composers, who generally delegated the task of writing the libretto (the text and lyrics) to others, Wagner wrote his own libretti, which he referred to as "poems". Bach indeed adapted a number of Vivaldi's works for organ and harpsichord, and as concertos for harpsichord and strings.
