In this case the ‘magic’ is viewed, especially by non-fiction writers, as very ‘real’. Traditional magical realism literature has definable elements of magical realism that all works in this genre share. Besides the example of Shame, the same applies to the other examples mentioned before: Perfume and Beloved and A Hundred Years of Solitude. We think that’s all the more reason to take a close look at how magical realism, science fiction, and fantasy differ from one another.

In the author biography section at the end of the book, the editors attempt to canonize many of the male authors (“without a doubt a Grand Master of Japanese science fiction and fantasy,” “one of the three pillars of Japanese SF,” “often referred to as ‘The King of Japanese SF,'” and so on), but I wonder if perhaps there wasn’t a hint of personal politics at play in the selection of authors. She's survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Occasionally throughout the text the narrator tries to make a case in favor of Walpole by stating his good qualities, but this is not convincing enough. For the reader, unlike the characters, has a second chance. Beloved is set in post-Civil War Ohio, where a former slave named Sethe escaped before the war ended and lives with her children. The first chapter begins with a distant omniscient point of view exercising godlike privileges not only of viewing the Black sharecropping family as a whole as they are balanced on the edge of tragedy, but of surveying a lonely landscape in which the “white man who owned the vast endless fields had scattered the cabins of his Negro sharecroppers far apart, like flyspecks on a whitewashed ceiling” (2).
